I’ve always admired the villain of any good story. There are all sorts of heroes, of course, including heroes that aren’t so spotless themselves, but a good villain—a good villain’s motivations and internal logic are accessible. Think Moriarty, Javert, Lex Luthor—you understand why they are the way they are, and why they think they way they do, and what they’re after, and how a soul can be corrupted.
Of course, some villains are awesomely indecipherable, e.g., Murakami’s Noboru Wataya.
